My Racing Experience by Rose Anne Reyes

I’m incredibly proud to be part of the second leg of KaFER CUP Pilipinas 2012.

Last May 12, 2012, I headed to the Clark International Speedway full of hope that I would meet the race's requirements. It was my first time to try racing and I really didn't know what to expect aside from a race track. I felt a sudden burst of fear when I saw mini coopers and GT cars revving up.  Now what? I finally lost my confidence when I saw that they had carriers for their cars.  I just said to myself that this is serious racing.

The whole day was dedicated to race practice.  On my first lap out, I had to learn about the correct racing line and get a proper feel of my car.  I couldn't believe I was even doing it. It’s not everyday I get the opportunity to push a 40-year old-car to its limits on a circuit.

Due to excitement, I went too fast around a corner and spun out on track twice. I was shaking then, feeling helpless at that moment.  I was left with no choice, so despite the feeling of unease, I continued driving.  When I reached the pit stop, I adjusted the tire pressure from 30 to 28 to make sure my car's tires have more grip on the track.

After a few hours of practice, I regained my confidence. Eventually, I was able to enjoy driving. I learned something new as I drove each lap; I even improved my sitting position.  I became 100% determined to join the 2nd leg of VW Kafer Cup, even with my lack of competitive racing skills.

I was so exhausted at the end of that day. I checked my mileage and couldn't believe I spent 100 kms for just the driving exercises.  Good thing that the fuel is cheaper at Clark.

The time for proper racing finally came and we were all ready to set the racing world on fire.  In the morning, we went for practice and attended a driver’s briefing session.  The driver’s briefing session was like a Latin class for me.  Very embarrassing! I didn’t understand what they were talking about. What stuck to me was that the pre-final had 5 laps while the final race had 7 laps. At least I was able to remember the most important information.

The most exciting moment for me was when I saw the checkered flag waving at me.  The feeling was priceless; I felt like I already won first place.  So, if there's one thing I'm proud of, it's being able to finish the race in one piece. Aside from this feat, I also received recognition as the “First Female VW Kafer CUP Racer.” It was absolutely a win-win game for me.
